From temples and shrines over a thousand years old to the newest skyscrapers, we document architecture across eras, regions and uses. Rather than treating buildings as mere data, we aim to present them together with the context in which they were created and their relationship to the city.

Data such as completion year, architect, height and number of floors are published only when verified in public sources, including Japanese Wikipedia, Wikidata and official facility websites. Items that cannot be verified are left blank rather than estimated. Sources are listed under “Sources” on each building page.

All photographs are freely licensed images from Wikimedia Commons. We check the licence of each file individually and use only images under CC BY / CC BY-SA / CC0 or in the public domain. We never assume an image is usable simply because it appears on Wikimedia Commons.

The current “Editors' Selection” is curated by our editors and is not a ranking based on page views.
