Chūta Itō

1867–1954

Born in Yonezawa, Dewa Province (now Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture). Through studies such as his research on Hōryū-ji, he laid the foundations of Japanese architectural history as a discipline.

He designed buildings with a distinctive vocabulary, including Meiji Jingu and Tsukiji Hongan-ji.
