Josiah Conder

1852–1920

Born in London, England. He came to Japan in 1877 and at the Imperial College of Engineering trained Kingo Tatsuno, Tokuma Katayama and others.

He designed many Western-style buildings of the Meiji era, including the Rokumeikan, the Former Iwasaki Family Residence and Mitsubishi Ichigokan. He is also known as a scholar of Japanese painting and Japanese gardens.
