Overview
Marunouchi's first office building, on its original site. The Meiji era, recreated in brick.
Designed by Josiah Conder and built in 1894 (Meiji 27), it was the first Western-style office building in Marunouchi. It became the starting point of the brick district known as "Itchō London", but was demolished in 1968.
In 2009 it was reconstructed in brick on the same site, based on the original drawings and survey records. Today it houses the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum and, together with the Ichigokan Square courtyard, offers a place of respite in Marunouchi.

Architect
Josiah Conder
Josiah Conder1852–1920
Born in London, England. He came to Japan in 1877 and at the Imperial College of Engineering trained Kingo Tatsuno, Tokuma Katayama and others.
He designed many Western-style buildings of the Meiji era, including the Rokumeikan, the Former Iwasaki Family Residence and Mitsubishi Ichigokan. He is also known as a scholar of Japanese painting and Japanese gardens.
