Red brick banded with white stone. A Taishō-era station, restored as the gateway to the capital.
The Marunouchi-side station building of Tokyo Station, opened in 1914 (Taishō 3). Designed by Kingo Tatsuno and his colleagues, it is composed in the so-called "Tatsuno style": red brick layered with bands of white granite. Its long façade, some 335 m in length, stands facing Gyōkō-dōri, the avenue leading to the Imperial Palace.
Air raids in 1945 destroyed the north and south domes and the roof, and after the war the three-storey building was restored with only two storeys. In 2012, a preservation and restoration project brought back the original three-storey form and the north and south domes. The building was designated a national Important Cultural Property in 2003.

Kingo Tatsuno
Kingo Tatsuno1854–1919
Born in Karatsu, Hizen Province (now Karatsu, Saga Prefecture). A member of the first graduating class of the architecture department of the Imperial College of Engineering, where he studied under Josiah Conder, he later became a professor there.
His manner of layering bands of white stone over red brick is known as the "Tatsuno style". His works include the Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building and the main building of the Bank of Japan head office.
