Overview
A vast glass hall shaped like a ship's keel. An urban lobby open to Marunouchi.
A large convention and cultural centre operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, built on the site of the former Tokyo City Hall. Designed by Rafael Viñoly, whose scheme was chosen in a 1989 international competition, it was completed in 1996 and opened in 1997.
Its highlight is the Glass Building, with a steel roof structure reminiscent of a ship's keel. Light entering its fully glazed atrium changes character through the day. The ground-level plaza between it and the hall block, lined with zelkova trees, forms a passage linking Marunouchi and Yūrakuchō.

Rafael Viñoly1944–2023
Born in Uruguay. He began his career in Argentina and later based himself in New York.
Selected as architect of the Tokyo International Forum in a 1989 international competition, he won international acclaim for its Glass Building, reminiscent of a ship's keel.
