Overview
Shrine halls and a great torii afloat on the high tide. Shinden-style architecture with the sea as its precinct.
The shrine buildings were developed to their present scale in the late Heian period under the devotion of Taira no Kiyomori. Built over the sea, at high tide the corridors and the great torii appear to float on the water.
The main sanctuary, which adopts the shinden style, and other buildings are designated National Treasures. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1996.
