Overview

From Kaminarimon to the main hall. Tokyo's oldest temple and an approach that has thrived since Edo.

According to temple tradition, founded in 628 (the 36th year of Empress Suiko), it is the oldest temple in Tokyo. The approach from Kaminarimon through Nakamise to Hōzōmon and the main hall has been the centre of Asakusa's bustle since the Edo period.

The main hall and five-storey pagoda were destroyed in the Great Tokyo Air Raid of 1945 and rebuilt in reinforced concrete after the war. The present main hall was completed in 1958.
