The Pure Land appearing across the pond. A Heian Amida hall that has lived a thousand years.
Fujiwara no Yorimichi converted his father Michinaga's villa into a temple, and in 1053 (Tengi 1) built the Amida Hall (Phoenix Hall). Its symmetrical form, like a phoenix spreading its wings, is reflected in the Aji-ike Pond.
A precious survival conveying the architecture, sculpture, painting and gardens of the Heian period, the Phoenix Hall is a National Treasure. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1994, and is also known for its image on the ten-yen coin.
