Overview
A cypress stage projecting over a cliff. A National Treasure main hall in the kakezukuri style, built without nails.
The head temple of the Kita-Hossō sect, standing on the slopes of Higashiyama. The present main hall was rebuilt in 1633 (Kan'ei 10) with the patronage of Tokugawa Iemitsu, and is designated a National Treasure.
The front of the main hall projects over the cliff, supported by a stage of assembled zelkova pillars in the kakezukuri style. From 2017 to 2020, the cypress-bark roof of the main hall was re-covered.
