Overview

Turrets and keep lining the summit of Mount Katsuyama. One of twelve original keeps surviving from the Edo period.

A hilltop castle whose construction was begun by Katō Yoshiaki in 1602 (Keichō 7). Its inner citadel sits on the summit of Mount Katsuyama, about 132 m above sea level, rising at the centre of the castle town.

The main keep was rebuilt in the late Edo period and is one of the twelve keeps built before the end of the Edo period that survive today. The main keep and many other structures are designated national Important Cultural Properties.
