Overview
333 m raised into the sky of postwar recovery. The steel tower that symbolises Shōwa-era Tokyo.
A broadcasting tower completed in 1958 (Shōwa 33); its official name is Nippon Denpatō. Its structural design was undertaken by Tachū Naitō, known as the "Doctor of Towers", together with Nikken Sekkei.
It is known for its international orange and white livery, required under aviation law, and at completion it was the tallest self-supporting steel tower in the world. With its observation decks, it remains a beloved Tokyo landmark.

Tachū Naitō
Tachu Naito1886–1970
Born in Yamanashi Prefecture. Teaching at Waseda University, he proposed the theory of seismic shear walls and contributed to the development of earthquake-resistant structures in Japan.
He carried out the structural design of many steel towers, including Tokyo Tower, Nagoya TV Tower and the second Tsūtenkaku.

Nikken Sekkei
One of Japan's leading architectural and engineering firms, originating in 1900 as the temporary construction department of the Sumitomo head office.
With the design of Tokyo Skytree and Shibuya Scramble Square among its works, it has an extensive record in urban infrastructure and high-rise buildings.
