Overview

Yokohama's classic hotel, overlooking Yamashita Park.

A hotel opened in 1927 (Shōwa 2) as a symbol of recovery from the Great Kantō Earthquake. The main building was designed by Jin Watanabe.

Weaving Eastern motifs into a Western style, the main building retains its original appearance and is recognised as a Yokohama historic building. It is also known as the place where General MacArthur stayed after the war.

Jin Watanabe

Jin Watanabe1887–1973

Born in Tokyo. Active in the early Shōwa era, he worked across a broad range, from historicist styles to modernism.

He designed buildings that remain beloved faces of their cities, such as the Wako Main Building (formerly K. Hattori & Co.) in Ginza and the Hotel New Grand in Yokohama.
