Overview
Wavering tubes and thin plates. A transparent box that rewrote the conventions of architecture.
A cultural complex opened in 2001, comprising a library, galleries, a visual media centre and more. Designed by Toyo Ito.
Thin floors (plates) are supported by thirteen "tubes" woven from steel pipes, which serve at once as structure and as conduits for light, services and circulation. Through the glass façade, the zelkova trees of Jōzenji-dōri overlap with the activity within.

Architect
Toyo Ito
Toyo Ito1941–
Born in 1941. After working at Kiyonori Kikutake's office, he established his own practice. With the Sendai Mediatheque, composed of thin floors and wavering tubes, he renewed the relationship between structure and space in architecture.
He received the Pritzker Prize in 2013, and has produced a wide range of works, from public to commercial buildings, in Japan and abroad.
